The police at Ariamsvlei have registered a case of a discovery of illicit drugs after a farmworker allegedly found cannabis worth over N$500 000 on a farm in the area.

Police crime investigations coordinator for the //Kharas region deputy commissioner Nicodemus Mbango says the farmworker discovered a bag full of cannabis at around 18h30 on Saturday on a farm situated about two kilometres from Ariamsvlei towards the Nakop border.

“Police were informed and after inspection of the bag, found parcels containing pure cannabis. The area was inspected and only footprints were observed. The condition of the bag suggested that it had been there for some months, possibly hidden by drug dealers,” says Mbango.

The drugs weighed 10.605 kilogrammes and were valued at N$530 250.

Meanwhile, the police at Lüderitz are investigating a case of sudden death after a 36-year-old inmate died around 13h00 on Friday at the local correctional facility.

It is alleged that the inmate collapsed at the facility and was rushed to the state hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

According to the police, he did not have a medical passport, and they could thus not determine his medical history.

“The body will be taken to Keetmanshoop for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death,” says the commissioner.

Police investigations in both matters continue.
