THE seventh Dr Uirab Fransfontein Christmas Soccer Bonanza saw the /Awa-aros farm shining the brightest over the festive period.
Queenteline Seibes began /Awa-aros’s domination when she was crowned Miss Fransfontein on 22 December, setting the tone for her male counterparts to follow suit and emerge champions of the football competition at the expense of 2016 winners Eastwood two days later.
The annual multi-faceted event is meant to foster pride and togetherness for Fransfontein and surrounding communities through sports and other entertainment.
All teams were required to enter to compete in the football, netball, Old Crocks 400m relay and tug of war categories, as well as the beauty pageant.
The teams were Fransfontein A, Fransfontein B, Karetes, Tsaraxaibes, Olifantsputs, Petrusfontein, Bamm-Post, Fransfontein Nampol, Gainatseb, Tsumamis, Eastwood, Mopanie and Berg Post combined.
“I applaud the sponsor, Dr [Dawid] Uirab, my organising team, all the teams and the whole community for a successful seventh edition of the tournament and festivities which were bigger and better, as promised,” chief organiser Reginald Roman beamed.
After being honoured as the fairest damsel in all of Fransfontein, Seibes, who is a Grade 12 learner at the Namib High School at Swakopmund, promised to engage in projects for the young and elderly during holidays before her reign ends in December 2018.
A big crowd was on hand to witness the football action, making for a carnival affair.
“The quality of football played here and the jubilant crowd from the Fransfontein settlement area and surrounding farms always turning up in big numbers is marvellous. That unity and turnout from the community is what fills our sponsor and community philanthropist Dr Uirab with pride,” said Roman.
Plans are afoot to expand the event into a larger attraction in the mould of the annual Windhoek Show, he added.
“We see that opportunity to expand and grow as we do this not only for today and tomorrow, but for generations to come. There are requests to include horse racing, agricultural livestock shows, and third-place prize awards in all other codes, just like soccer gets,” said Roman.
“There were also suggestions to suspend one edition of the bonanza and build a mini sports stadium, including a netball court and grass turf, with the funds of that suspended year.”
For that dream to become a reality, the LOC requires a substantial investment to complement the annual contribution of Dr Uirab.
“The annual bonanza organising team welcomes sponsorships from any other sons and daughters who want to come on board as we are geared to making the festivities bigger as a team. We say thank you. See this generous support as a two-way street, and we will also continue to support your businesses and initiatives.”
