Wilma Januarie, a teacher at JTL Beukes Primary School at Rehoboth, on Thursday during the school’s first parent meeting for the year announced that 57 out of 551 pupils in the lower primary were not promoted last year.
She said 20 out of 457 pupils in the upper primary were not promoted.
“In Grade 1, 22 pupils from 165 were not promoted. Eight Grade 3 pupils were not promoted last year. In Grade 4, 18 pupils did not pass. One pupil in Grade 5 and one in Grade 6 were not promoted. In pre-primary, we had a 100% promotion rate,” Januarie said.
“We are, however, pleased that zero pupils failed Grade 7. The highest failure was in Grade 2, with 27 pupils. This year we aim to do more.
“We have a action plan of interventions for academic improvement for 2025 set in place. During our first parent meeting we discussed it with the parents. We are looking forward to a fruitful year,” Januarie said.
She said some of the interventions for academic improvement includes reading corners in all classrooms, up to date lessons plans that are planned in advance, reflections from teachers, incorporated literacy, numeracy and writing skills in every lesson, efforts to engage with parents, teachers using aids, and enrichment activities for the gifted pupils.
“We will draw up an individual plan for below-average and gifted pupils. For all pupils we will have up to date lesson plans which are planned in advance. We will continue to urge all pupils to aim high and to always do their best,” Januarie said.
