The National Art Gallery of Namibia (NAGN) welcomes arts lovers, artists and friends of the gallery to a new year with its first exhibition, ‘New Beginnings’, an annual exhibition by College of the Arts (Cota) graduates.
Every year, Cota holds an exhibition of works by graduates of its visual art department. ‘New Beginnings’ is now in its eighth iteration celebrating yet another year of success in teaching, learning, thinking and making. After 14 years of tuition, the Cota visual art department has become an established institution in the field, producing some of Namibia’s most exciting and innovative artists. Their accredited three-year Visual Art Diploma programme teaches a variety of art and craft skills and allows students to major in a technique of their choice in the final year.
The exhibition opens at the NAGN on Thursday, 26 January and will run until Saturday, 11 March.
Other exhibitions are still running at the national gallery, including the solo exhibition by Chris Snyman ‘Urban Mythology’, which opened on 13 December 2016.
This unique exhibition eloquently captures the spirit and mission of a modern Namibia like no other. ‘Urban Mythology’ bridges the role from presentation of modern folklore consisting of fictional stories to cutting-edge contemporary art with the aim of interweaving the historical and contemporary events that have shaped and continue to impact our country and its inhabitants.
‘Urban Mythology’ is on at the NAGN until 28 January.
‘Narratives of Space’, which has been running at the NAGN since the last part of 2016, is also still running until 21 January. The exhibition explores the concept of space and comprises of artworks from the gallery’s permanent collection and the Arts Association Heritage Trust Collection.
