Ex-Nust spokesperson apologises to legal adviser Kaumbi over defamation

Former Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) spokesperson John Haufiku has publicly apologised to the university’s chief legal adviser, Joshua Kaumbi, for defaming him.

In July 2023, Kaumbi filed a N$500 000 lawsuit against Haufiku for alleging in a Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) interview that the university had suspended Kaumbi for leaking information to the media.

Haufiku said he made these remarks in response to a follow-up question from the presenter during the interview.

He said the wording was spontaneous and not a premeditated response.

Haufiku said upon reflection, he realised the phrasing could have been misunderstood.

In his public apology, dated 4 November, Haufiku wrote: “I, Johannes Haufiku . . . extend my sincere apology to Mr Joshua Razikua Kaumbi and his family. My comments were made with malice or intent to harm, and I regret any distress or reputational discomfort that may have arisen as a consequence.”

The university has been ordered by the High Court to contribute towards Kaumbi’s legal fees of N$50 000
