Events to keep you warm this winter

WALVIS BAY STOP … Lioness will start the multistep tour for her album ‘If Not In This Life’ this weekend at Katz Lounge.

The coming days are all about celebrating Namibian art and creativity, healing and self-improvement, forming community and joining inspiring discussions. The air may be a little chilly, but it doesn’t mean we need to shut ourselves down.

Today

Helmut Lauschke’s solo exhibition ‘One Life: Understanding, Commitment, Decency and Honesty’ is live at the Goethe Institut until 6 June.

This weekend the all-day Windhoek Annual Cultural Festival returns to Sam Nujoma Stadium until Sunday. Catch the likes of DJ Vuyo, King Tee Dee, Busiswa (from South Africa) and others on stage, along with food, drink and small and medium enterprises stalls. Entry is N$40 in advance, N$60 at the gate and N$200 for VIP.

This Weekend

This Saturday, Vinyls Music and Arts Café is hosting an Open Mic for poets, musicians and comedians seeking a platform for creative expression. Registration will cost you N$30. The show begins at 14h30.

Rapper Lioness’ tour for her latest album ‘If Not In This Life’ starts this Saturday at Katz Lounge at Walvis Bay, featuring ML Musician. The tour continues at Truth Entertainment at Ongwediva on 30 May, at Rundu’s AM Ludgerus Boutique on 31 May and at The Loft in Windhoek on 7 June. Ticket prices will be released soon.

Zuzu Holding Hands Cancer Foundation is hosting ‘Warriors of Hope: Fighting Cancer Together’, an inspiring and informative discussion on awareness, prevention and support. The event takes place this Saturday at the Ongwediva Trade Fair Centre between 16h00 and 20h00, with speakers such as Sirkka Ndjoba of the Kaunapawa Foundation, registered nurse Jospehine Amutenya and doctor Emily Malima of Onandjokwe Hospital, with Ori Tjiuru as the master of ceremonies. The theme is ‘Cancer Doesn’t Wait, Neither Should You’ and entry is free.

Sunday brings us ‘Rhythm of Africa’ at Isabel’s Table, with Shoza, Soul Brother, Spuzza and others on the decks, and a specially curated African menu. Entry is N$50 if you are wearing African attire and N$100 otherwise. The event starts at 14h00.

Next Week

The Namibian Arts Association is hosting a lino printing workshop from Monday, 26 May to Friday, 30 May between 10h00 and 16h00 at the Tsumeb Teacher Resource Centre. This programme is designed to revive, develop and share traditional and contemporary printmaking skills with teachers, students and community artists. On Friday, there will be an exhibition.

Come through for Theatre Sports interactive improv theatre next Thursday, 29 May at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre in Windhoek. The event starts at 19h00 and entry is free.

Next Friday, 30 May, the Namibian National Symphony Orchestra and the Alabama School of Fine Arts will host an orchestral odyssey exploring classical versions of music from ‘Star Wars’ (composed by John Williams) and other famous films. Alexander Fokkens will serve as conductor at the Gereformeerde Kerk in Windhoek. Tickets are N$120 at the door from 19h00.

Next Saturday, Pequena is hosting their Who’s Next Rhythm and Brunch music event starring South African artist Sino Msolo with The Rhythm, Mega, Zottie and others on the decks. Ticket prices will be released soon.

Recurring

Whispers of Wellness is hosting ‘Rise and Align’ yoga classes taking place every Monday and Wednesday between 06h00 and 07h00 at The Yoga Shala inside the Maerua Mall Lifestyle Centre. It’s N$130 to drop in for one class and N$100 per class for Shala members.

Vinyls Music and Art Café hosts a karaoke night every Tuesday from 20h00 – and on Wine Wednesdays you can pop in for three glasses of their finest for N$150. The special runs all day long.

MTC Windhoek Go Karts hosts Karaoke Night every Thursday between 18h00 and 22h00. Entry is free and there’s a happy hour between 19h00 and 20h00.
