Eros girls’ hostel falling apart

THE roof in the hostel of the Eros School for Girls is leaking and water is soaking the halls and some of the rooms.

Every time it rains, the children have to move their beds around to prevent them getting soaked. Water pipes in the ceiling also leak and water seeps through the ceiling into the library. The school has been reporting the leaking roof to the Ministry of Works for the past three years. Three years ago, ministerial workers fixed the ceiling but not the roof, and after the first rain the problem started all over again. The ceiling has in the meantime once again collapsed and is still broken. Water has seeped into the walls and ceiling, there are some mould spots on the ceiling, the paint is peeling off the walls and the nylon tiles are coming loose. The damage is getting more and more extensive. The leaking roof and pipes are not the only cause of discomfort to the 136 children and teachers living in the hostel. Often there is no hot water as the geysers are old and rusty. The water pressure is sometimes so low that no water comes from the taps.Yesterday morning, this was the case again and the girls had to wash themselves under a tap in the garden. Some of the girls set their alarm clocks for 02h00 in the hope of getting a hot shower at a time when the water pressure is high enough. These problems have also been reported to the Ministry of Works repeatedly over the past years, sources at the hostel say.
