End of Foot and Mouth disease status for Kavango and Caprivi

THE status of the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak in the Caprivi and Kavango Regions has officially ended and restrictions on the movements of livestock have been lifted, the Ministry of Agriculture has announced yesterday.

Cattle can be brought to Katima Mulilo and Oshakati for slaughter once they have undergone the quarantine period at the two abattoirs.’With effect from Monday, July 6, the outbreak of FMD is officially declared over and the restrictions of movement of animal products and live animals within the Caprivi and Kavango are lifted,’ Deputy Agriculture Minister Isak Katali told the National Assembly yesterday. ‘Movement of livestock in the Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshana and Kunene Regions are allowed again but with a veterinary permit after the inspection of animals at designated points,’ Katali added.FMD broke out in Caprivi in November 2007 and in Kavango a year ago.
