Emily Kandanga Raises The Bar In Fitness And Bodybuilding

Emily Kandanga

When Emily Kandanga sets her mind on something, there is little that can stop her.

Known as a holistic fitness coach and co-founder of Sweat Fitness, she recently extended her reach into competitive bodybuilding – a leap that has challenged and reshaped her both personally and professionally.

Kandanga’s interest in movement began early. As a child, she loved running and playing sport, mostly as a way to spend time with friends. It was only during her university years that she discovered the transformative impact of fitness.

“When I started to exercise, I saw how it changed not just my body but also my confidence and discipline. I was immediately hooked and became passionate about sharing that with other people,” she says. “The industry has given me so much – a career I love, the chance to impact lives and the constant reminder that growth happens outside your comfort zone.”

Although she has spent more than a decade working in the fitness field, Kandanga never imagined stepping onto a bodybuilding stage. That changed recently when she decided she needed a new challenge.

“Bodybuilding is a whole other level,” she says. “It’s not just training hard, it’s training smart, eating with precision and managing your mind as much as your muscles. Stress can negatively impact how your body recovers, so it’s about balance as well as strength.”

Earlier this year, she entered her first bodybuilding competition, the PCA Battle of Titans show in Durbanville, Cape Town.

Travelling with a Namibian team coached by Dewald Stewart from BeShaped Namibia, she found strength in the collective spirit.

“Being part of a team definitely helped keep me focused when things got a little hard,” she adds. “Being on stage was nerve-wracking, exciting and empowering all at once. Bodybuilding has reminded me of the value of discipline, and it’s taught me patience, resilience and self-belief in ways I didn’t expect.”

While Kandanga has always worked to inspire others through coaching, bodybuilding has given her a deeper appreciation of what focused effort can achieve.

“It’s proof that when you commit, you can completely rewrite your own story,” she says.

Her journey, however, has not been without challenges. Entering a male-dominated field has meant constantly proving herself.

“For a woman it is always challenging because people don’t always take us seriously at first, especially in a sport and industry dominated by men,” she explains. “I’ve learned you can’t wait for permission – you have to create your own opportunities and push through the stereotypes.”

Kandanga is clear about the message she wants to send to other women: consistency and self-belief can take anyone further than they think possible.

“You can do absolutely anything you set your mind to and that is something you should never doubt,” she says. “Yes, it will be hard, you will face doubters, but don’t let your own voice join that crew of doubters. Don’t shrink your dreams to fit other people’s expectations.”

She believes humour and perspective are equally important tools. “I’ve learned to laugh at the tough moments rather than wallowing in self-pity,” she says. “A sense of humour goes a long way. I keep my goals clear, build habits around them and stay consistent, even when I don’t feel like it. Success comes down to small daily choices – meal prepping, training, rest and protecting my mindset.”

Looking ahead, Kandanga plans to compete in more bodybuilding events and hopes to represent Namibia on bigger stages. At the same time, she is committed to expanding her coaching practice, both in person and online, while using her own experience to motivate others.

“I want to show that Namibia belongs in that global conversation,” she says. “My journey is not just about me. It’s about showing what is possible when you commit fully. And if my story inspires even one person to believe in themselves a little more, then it’s all worth it.”

For Kandanga, fitness is a path to empowerment, resilience and community.

And whether in the gym, on stage or through her coaching, she is determined to keep raising the bar.
