Eight shacks were destroyed in a fire at Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay, on Saturday afternoon, according to the Erongo police.
Erongo police spokesperson senior inspector Judith Shomongula says the fire broke out at about 17h30 at house numbers 5692 and 5691 in Omuthiya Street.
The owners of the two properties told the police the blaze started suddenly and spread rapidly through the backyard structures.
A total of five shacks at house 5692 and three shacks at house 5691 were completely gutted. An outside room at house 5691 also caught fire on one side, causing visible cracks to the wall, although the flames did not enter the room.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. No injuries or deaths were reported, but several residents lost property and personal belongings.
Shomongula says the Walvis Bay municipality’s fire brigade extinguished the fire before it could spread further.
The police have urged community members, particularly those living in informal structures, to apply basic fire safety measures and ensure precautions are taken before leaving their homes.
Police investigations continue.
