Eight people held for mob violence

POLICE at Oshakati have arrested eight people in connection with the attack on a man who was nearly beaten to death by a group of people from the Oshoopala informal settlement north east of Oshakati on Sunday afternoon.

The mob accused Lukas Ndahomenwa (35), also known as Kududa, of allegedly poisoning Kamboy ka Mweupilika, also from Oshoopala, NamPol Liaison Officer Warrant Officer Samuel Hamukonda said yesterday. According to Hamukonda, many of the people arrested on Wednesday, including some women, were from Oshoopala and have been charged with assault. They will appear in the Oshakati Magistrate’s Court today. The arrest of the eight angered Oshoopala residents and they stormed to the Oshakati Police station on Wednesday demanding the release of the accused, but the Police dispersed them with sjamboks.”No, no, no, the Police are not fair, they cannot protect a person who is killing other people with poison,” an angry mob member charged, while shouting at the Police:”Don’t protect criminals please.”Some members of the mob threatened that they would deal with Kududa once he was out of hospital. They said that they would not allow him to live with them at the settlement. Before he died, Mweupilika allegedly told his wife and neighbours that he was given a glass of tombo by his friend Lukas ‘Kududa’ Ndahomenwa. However, the owner of the cuca shop has said that Kamboy poured his own drink.According to Hamukonda, many of the people arrested on Wednesday, including some women, were from Oshoopala and have been charged with assault. However, the owner of the cuca shop has said that Kamboy poured his own drink.
