Egypt dominate Rhythmic Gymnastics African Champs

ABOUT 100 gymnasts from seven African countries competed in the 13th African Championships for Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini Trampoline which took place in Walvis Bay over the past week.

Egypt dominated the Rhythmic Gymnastics competition, winning most of the categories on offer, but Namibia did well in the Trampoline/Double Mini competition, winning numerous medals in the team and individual categories.

In the Rhythmic Gymnastics competition, Egypt came out on top with five gold medals in the team competitions, while their gymnast Mariam Selim won five gold medals in the junior individual categories.

South Africa won five silver medals in the team competitions while their gymnast Grace Legote won four gold and one silver medal in the senior individual categories.

Angola won a gold medal in the senior group all round category, while Zimbabwe won three bronze medals and Namibia two bronze medals.

The hosts Namibia fared much better in the Trampoline/Double Mini competition, winning three gold and five silver medals in the team categories.

South Africa won three gold, two silver and three bronze medals, while Egypt won three gold, two silver and one bronze medal.

In the individual categories, Namibia’s Charlize van Zyl won two gold medals; Carane van Zyl won one gold and one silver medal; Emile Pitt won a silver medal; and Thalia Loveira and Josef Nawameb each won a bronze medal.

South Africa’s Zander Biewenga and Bianca Zoonekynd each won two gold medals, while Onke Mangele and Gaofenngwa Tlatsana won one gold medal each.

Abdelkadar Sabour and Abdennour Annag of Algeria and Ashrakat Ismail of Egypt each won one gold medal.

A total of seven countries competed in the championships namely the hosts Namibia, Angola, Algeria, Cape Verde, Egypt, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
