Education ministry declares Friday a school holiday

Education minister Sanet Steenkamp

The Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture has declared Friday, 23 February, a school holiday as part of the mourning arrangements for president Hage Geingob and the preparations for his final memorial service and funeral over the weekend.

Executive director Sanet Steenkamp announced this in a media release on Tuesday.

“This is part of the… activities leading up to the national memorial service on Saturday, 24 February, and the state funeral on Sunday, 25 February,” Steekamp said.

She requested that principals and teachers from Windhoek schools identify representatives in groups of 15 to 20 pupils in full school uniform to take part in the official procession on Friday during the memorial service.

“The drop-off venue and collection point will be communicated to the Director of Education, Arts and Culture of the Khomas Regional Council in due course,” she said.

Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture public relations officer Esther Angula said there will also be no school on Monday, 26 February, due to the public holiday.
