The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) on Friday announced that out of the 1.4 million voters registered in the country, 745 429 are now registered for the local authority elections.
The elections are slated for 26 November.
The final figures are expected to be announced after objections to the provisional voters’ register, which was launched on Friday.
This was announced by ECN director of operations Zenia Klazen during a stakeholders’ engagement with political parties.
“Out of the 1 670 813, a total of 1 499 235 are registered voters. Before 8 August, registered voters stood at 1 445 433 in all 121 constituencies,” she said.
Commissioner Pius Iikwambi said the provisional voters’ register will run until 15 September for 14 days.
“This is to give the public and political parties a chance to object,” he said.
Meanwhile, ECN acting chief electoral and referanda officer Hendrina Jacobs said the last date for nominations of independent candidates is 14 October, and 16 October for political parties.
She said the names of candidates will be released publicly on 5 November.
She also announced that special voting, such as by police officers, will take place on 24 November.
The deployment of materials is set for 23 to 25 November.
