An ECN polling officer allegedly ended his own life after a botched attempt to steal petrol from a generator led to a fire at a colleague’s house at Outapi on Thursday morning.
Omusati regional commander Ismael Basson says the alleged theft went wrong while the suspects, all ECN polling officers, were pouring oil from a generator into a jerrycan when part of it spilled onto the floor in the house of one of the suspects at Aimele 16 location.
Basson says the fuel came into contact with a gas fridge in the house.
“The house caught fire as a result, which prompted the police to investigate. They fled the scene, and one of the bodies of the suspects was later discovered under a tree,” he says.
The deceased has been identified as Samuel Shaanyenga (33).
Basson says none of the other suspects have been arrested as investigations are still ongoing.
