Easter road accidents: More crashes, fewer injuries, but fatalities creep up

Namibia’s Easter weekend saw a rise in road accidents and fatalities, despite a decrease in the number of injuries recorded by the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund.

The fund has published its preliminary analysis of road incidents over the Easter weekend, covering 18 to 21 April.

“This time of year is synonymous with family reunions and cross-country travel, but it also brings an unfortunate spike in road crashes.

“Historically, holiday weekends such as Easter have become some of the most tragic periods on Namibia’s roads, especially along high-traffic routes like the B1 through Windhoek (north and southbound) and the B2 heading towards the East,” the fund says.

While the total number of crashes increased from 37 last Easter to 42 this Easter, which is a rise of 13.5%, the fund recorded a notable decrease in injuries, which dropped from 126 in 2024 to 96 in 2025, marking an almost 24% improvement.

Fatalities, however, edged up by one, from eight to nine, underscoring that even a single death is unacceptable.
