Earth tremor shakes Omaruru

AN EARTH tremor was recorded just south-east of Omaruru in the early hours of Wednesday morning, the Ministry of Mines and Energy confirmed today.

In a media release issued earlier today the ministry stated that the tremor, which measured 3,6 on the local magnitude scale (formerly the Richter magnitude scale), is recorded to have occurred at 04h37 and was picked up by five local seismic stations, namely in Windhoek and at Tsumeb, Kamanjab, Opuwo and Rundu.

“Preliminary analyses were performed on the data [and] seismic phases were picked up from these stations for analyses,” the release said.

The ministry also provided coordinates for where the earthquake event occurred, which translated to the geocode address of Waldfrieden in the Erongo region.

The ministry detailed that the epicentre of the event was located in an area where there are ancient faults, stating: “The historical records show that the current location is one of the known seismic zones in the country.”

A Roman Catholic Church mission and the Waldfrieden Benedictine Monastery are located at Waldfrieden.
