Patrick Durand of Dolphins Swimming Club smashed a long-standing record at the Bank Windhoek Long Course Gala 3 over the weekend.
Competing in the boys 12 and under category, Durand won the 800m freestyle in a new record time of 10 minutes 18,09 seconds, which took more than 10 seconds off the previous record of 10:29,53 which was established by Corne le Roux 12 years ago.
That was the only record of the gala, although several swimmers came close to breaking more records.
Patrick’s older brother Oliver put in some fine performances in the boys 17-18 year category.
He won the 100m butterfly in 56,20 seconds, which was just outside his national record of 55,95, while he won the 50m backstroke in 28,67 seconds, coming close to Ronan Wantenaar’s record of 26,99. Durand also set a good time of 1:56,59 to win the 200m freestyle, which was more than three seconds off his own national record of 1:52,90.
Luke Beukes of Aqua Swimming and Fitness Academy came close to breaking two records in the boys 17-18 year category.
He won the 50m butterfly in 25,56 seconds which was just outside Oliver Durand’s record of 25,39, while he won the 100m freestyle in 52,53 seconds, which was within a second of Alex Skinner’s 2016 record of 51,54.
Rodney Feris of Aqua put in some strong times in the boys 15-16 year category.
He won the 50m butterfly in 26,98, coming close to Beukes’ record of 25,66, while he won the 100m freestyle in 55,34, which was also close to Durand’s record of 53,03.
Guoxuan Huang of Dolphins put in some fine performances in the boys 9-10 year category.
He won the 100m backstroke in 1:20,71, coming close to Oliver Durand’s record of 1:19,14, while he won the 50m backstroke in 38,22 seconds, which was not too far off Ryan Steyn’s record of 36,35.
In the girls 15-16 year category, Roselinda Matyayi of Aqua won the 50m backstroke in 31,31 seconds, which was not too far off Jessica Humphrey’s record of 29,25.
Ainoa Naukosho of Dolphins also put in a good performance in the girls 13-14 50m butterfly with a time of 30,85 seconds, coming close to Matyayi’s record of 29,51.
Luke Beukes produced the best performance of the gala in terms of international Fina points.
He obtained 689 Fina points for winning the boys 17-18 100m freestyle in 52,53 seconds, while he also obtained 661 Fina points for his 50m butterfly time of 25,56.
Oliver Durand produced the second and third best performances, obtaining 681 Fina points for his 100m butterfly time of 56,20 and 669 Fina points for his 200m freestyle time of 1:56,59.
Jose Canjulo of Dolphins produced the fifth best Fina performance of 636 points after winning the boys 19 and over 100m butterfly in 57,50 seconds.
