The person killed in an accident in the dunes near Walvis Bay on Saturday has been identified by the police as Pashula Hangula (13).

The accident happened when the attempt of the driver (21) of a pickup to navigate the dunes ended in a fatal roll.

Erongo police spokesperson inspector Ileni Shapumba says the driver, following another vehicle in the sandy terrain, found his vehicle lodged in the sand.

“In his attempt to dislodge the vehicle, it skidded on the loose sand, overturned, and rolled down the dune,” he says, adding that Hangula was ejected from the vehicle during the accident and pronounced dead at the scene.

The vehicle carried five occupants, including the driver, of which three sustained injuries.

They were transported to Walvis Bay State Hospital.

The full extent of their injuries remains unknown at this time.

“The police have informed the next of kin of the deceased and are actively investigating the incident as a culpable homicide case,” Shapumba says, calling for heightened awareness and caution when navigating the unpredictable dunes surrounding Walvis Bay.
