Dundee Precious Metals Tsumeb Sponsors Educational Tour to Sweden

Eleven Grade 11 and 12 pupils from Otjikoto Senior Secondary School in Tsumeb recently represented Namibia at a conference in Sweden for 14 days.

The purpose of the trip was to attend the Model United Nations (UN) conference. Dundee Precious Metals sponsored a total of N$50 000 for this cause.

Model UN is an educational simulation competition in which students learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. Model UN also involves and teaches research, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.

Out of 150 delegates, two pupils from Otjikoto Secondary School made it to the top 10 and scooped two significant prizes for Best Speakers in peace and security as well as health and environment awards.

The delegation from Namibia was accompanied by English teacher Aletta Malakia, principal Hileni Shilongo and Oshikoto regional education director Lamek Kafidi.

“The trip was interesting in terms of culture diversity and the level of technology is different from here in Namibia, the experience was amazing. Thank you Dundee for the contribution,” said Brandon Shikwambi, a Grade 12 pupil.

The Namibian delegation took part in the debate and the aim of it was to tackle issues affecting the globe. The pupils said that they learned more about problems arising around the globe.

“Dundee Precious Metals does a lot for Otjikoto year after year, we appreciate what they do for us,” Malakia said.
