Drugs worth over N$3.5 million found at Ariamsvlei

Border officials at the Ariamsvlei Border Post discovered cannabis and mandrax tablets valued at more than N$3.5 million hidden under a bridge near the border entry point early on Sunday.

Namibian Police chief inspector Elifas Kuwinga confirmed the incident, saying the discovery was made at about 01h20 during a routine inspection of the surrounding area.

According to Kuwinga, officials noticed suspicious shoe prints leading to an area under the bridge located after the border entry. Upon following the shoe prints, they found three large bags concealed beneath the structure.

“No persons were found in the immediate vicinity, and the tracks later mixed with others in the surrounding area, making it difficult to identify the suspect,” Kuwinga says.

Upon inspection, the bags were found to contain 59 parcels of cannabis, 55 grams of loose cannabis, and 4 073 full mandrax tablets. The total weight of the cannabis is 60.55 kilograms, with an estimated street value of over N$3 million, while the mandrax tablets are valued at N$488 760, bringing the total estimated value of the drugs to N$3.5 million.

“The prohibited substances were seized and registered as found property for further police processing,” Kuwinga says.

Police investigations into the matter continue.
