Driver ploughs into group of pupils

FIVE schoolchildren were injured yesterday when an allegedly drunk driver ploughed into them as they were crossing the street at the Holy Cross Convent in Windhoek.

One of the five youngsters was taken to hospital. Other children were visibly traumatised and one little girl said: “This is not a soap opera, this is real life and we could have been killed.”The suspect tried to flee the scene but was stopped by a traffic officer.Parents and other bystanders then pulled the man out of the car and detained him until the Police arrived.For nearly a year the children have been crossing Mandume Ndemufayo Street safely with the aid of traffic officers.After school yesterday, traffic officers once again stopped the traffic to let the children cross, but a man in a Citigolf failed to stop.The man initially refused to take the breathalyser test, but changed his mind when officers informed him that this would just add another charge to his docket.He allegedly tested above the legal alcohol limit and was arrested on charges of drunk driving and reckless and negligent driving.Other children were visibly traumatised and one little girl said: “This is not a soap opera, this is real life and we could have been killed.”The suspect tried to flee the scene but was stopped by a traffic officer.Parents and other bystanders then pulled the man out of the car and detained him until the Police arrived.
