BAGANI – Khwe Chief Benny Ngombara has urged farmers to stop cultivating fields along the Okavango River.
The Chief was reacting to reports that some farmers in his area had experienced conflict with wild animals, particularly hippos, which had destroyed crop fields near the river. “This problem is experienced along the river every year, therefore, we should refrain from establishing fields near the river,” said Ngombara at Mui’chiku village in Mukwe Constituency. He encouraged residents to rather establish their fields on higher ground away from the river.Ngombara said that conflict could be reduced if residents established crop fields a distance from the river. The Chief said hippos last week destroyed fields belonging to a villager at Mui’chiku, leaving the farmer without food.- Nampa”This problem is experienced along the river every year, therefore, we should refrain from establishing fields near the river,” said Ngombara at Mui’chiku village in Mukwe Constituency. He encouraged residents to rather establish their fields on higher ground away from the river.Ngombara said that conflict could be reduced if residents established crop fields a distance from the river. The Chief said hippos last week destroyed fields belonging to a villager at Mui’chiku, leaving the farmer without food.- Nampa
