National Democratic Party (NDP) leader Martin Lukato has implored the party’s new councillor, Mukendwa Simasiku, not to become an instrument to people, but to represent the interests of the party and its electorate to the fullest.

Simasiku was officially sworn in to represent the NDP at the Katima Mulilo council yesterday.

The party elected Simasiku to replace Watson Kalaluka, who was recalled after being found guilty on multiple charges of misconduct in July.

Simasiku was sworn in by magistrate Davy Kambinda.

Lukato said Simasiku had a lot of catching up to do with regards to service delivery to the masses, due to his official swearing in being delayed since July.

“However, now that you’re in office we are confident that you will serve the masses as per our party manifesto,” he said.

Zambezi regional governor Lawrence Sampofu called on Simasiku to work together with other councillors to fight poverty, unemployment and crime.

“Let’s maintain unity, as it’s the best weapon against underdevelopment, tribalism and corruption. Listen to the community’s needs and attend to them as a team,” he said.
