Dolam flood victims housed in Sam Nujoma stadium

THE City of Windhoek has provided temporary shelter in the Sam Nujoma Stadium for 130 people whose houses were flooded in Katutura’s Dolam location.

Fourteen houses behind the football stadium were flooded on Wednesday night. Residents blame the situation on the construction of the stadium, saying it rerouted the river too close to their homes. The Emergency Unit of the Office of the Prime Minister and the Namibian Red Cross have joined the Municipality in assisting the affected households with basic needs such as food, blankets and toiletries. The City said it was continuously monitoring the situation.”We urge residents and drivers alike to be on alert, use alternative roads, not to cross flowing rivers and to serious adhere to the road traffic signs, particularly now during the rainy season,” it said in a press release. The Municipality says the danger zones in the city are Hippocrates Street, the corner of Rand and Shanghai streets, Clemens Kapuuo Street, Nelson Mandela Avenue, Von Eckenbrecher Street and the Avis Bridge.Residents blame the situation on the construction of the stadium, saying it rerouted the river too close to their homes. The Municipality says the danger zones in the city are Hippocrates Street, the corner of Rand and Shanghai streets, Clemens Kapuuo Street, Nelson Mandela Avenue, Von Eckenbrecher Street and the Avis Bridge.
