Doctors in the North attend urological seminar

THE Governor of Oshana has called upon medical practitioners from South Africa and Namibia to share experiences for the betterment of knowledge and expertise.

Officially opening a seminar on Management of Urological Entities in Oshakati this week, Oshana Regional Governor Klemens Kashuupulwa stressed the importance of exchanging experiences in the field of health and medicine. He thanked the seminar’s main speaker, Dr Andre van der Merwe, a Consultant in the Urology Department at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, for his recent work at the local hospitals. Before the seminar, Dr van der Merwe operated on patients with sensitive conditions at the Oshakati State Hospital and visited patients at Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital.Kashuupulwa also praised doctors who had conducted heart operations in Windhoek, saying they were the first of their kind to be done in Namibia.”Truly there is progress in sharing such experience and skills between medical practitioners from South Africa and Namibia on such sensitive heart operation(s),”Governor Kashuupulwa said.He said on behalf of Government that he was thankful for the initiative and hoped that further such visits would take place, where medical practitioners shared experience and expertise. This would “tender the required service of high standards to the Namibian people”.Kashuupulwa said it was costly to send Namibian patients outside the country and that medical practitioners, especially from South Africa, should visit to share their experience and train local medical practitioners. This would enormously benefit the Namibian people.”So it is our duty as a Government to always encourage these practices to continue for years to come,” said Kashuupulwa.Director of First National Bank, Prince Shiimi, said his bank was determined to uplift the health standard of the Namibian people.Director of Health in the North Dr Naftali Hamata told the seminar that medical practitioners from South Africa and Namibia needed to share knowledge.”We have been colonised by one coloniser, the then South Africa Regime, but we hardly communicate to each other, so let (us) always come together and share information, skills and knowledge, “Dr Hamata said. The seminar was attended by doctors and nursed from northern hospitals, who discussed medical aspects of urological treatment of patients. It was held at the Oshandira Lodge in Oshakati, was sponsored by First National Bank of Namibia, who also sponsored the trip and the stay of Dr van der Merwe in Namibia.
