SPIRITED Windhoek-born DJ Seboa is hard at work moulding a space for herself within the local music scene.
With comparatively limited public gigs under her belt, mostly in local clubs such as Hookah Lounge and the now defunct Funky Lab, she has managed to create a fan base of entertainment industry insiders, whom she has convinced of her credentials as a budding DJ.
Born Abigail Rietz 26 years ago, Seboa’s parents at the time had no resources to raise her in Windhoek. She was subsequently put into the care of her aunt at Gibeon, in the Hardab region. These early years instilled a deep love and appreciation for the simple life, an understanding of the luxury of living close to nature on the one hand – and on the other of the hardships associated with survival on a farm and in a community that has to make do with what is available.
Seboa today possesses a strong urban spirit of a woman who pursues her path professionally – in the insurance procurement sector – and is also in touch with the world around her. It’s the ‘city girl’ in her that made her fall in love with the work of a DJ. As she says, “I love being able not only to get people moving on the dance floor but also to influence them beyond that experience, in their tastes, their mood, their outlook on life through my music”.
She is also a singer in her own right. An explanation for her love for music and her grasp of rhythm and harmony is the fact that she was, from an early age, musically raised in the River of Life community choir. She was discovered by the late Ernst Van Biljon, who gave her the space and exposure as a solo vocalist in the Namibian Youth Choir.
Seboa will be performing alongside Jackson Wahengo and the Homeboys who are headlining an Independence Day celebration concert at the Warehouse Theatre. Tickets will be available for sale in advance and at the door.
