Disney’s first same-sex couple debuts

A PAIR of lesbian moms appeared on Sunday’s ‘Good Luck Charlie’.

On the same day that same-sex couples swapped vows on the Grammy stage, a quieter moment of LGBT history was being made further down the TV dial: The Disney Channel introduced its first same-sex couple, lesbian moms on ‘Good Luck Charlie’.

In Sunday’s episode, Charlie’s parents set up a family play date with their preschooler’s new friend Taylor, only Dad Bob thinks Taylor’s mom’s name is Cheryl, while Mom Amy swears it’s Susan.

Cue the doorbell and then … a pair of smiling blondes in the doorway. Bob smacks his forehead: “Taylor has two moms!”

“Wow,” deadpans his wife. “Nothing gets past you, Bob.”

Last summer, when the character news was announced, the network said in a statement: “This particular story line was developed under the consultancy of child development experts and community advisers. Like all Disney Channel programming, it was developed to be relevant to kids and families around the world and to reflect themes of diversity and inclusiveness.”

The channel’s older sister network, ABC Family, is no stranger to same-sex relationships: Lesbian moms are the focus of ‘The Fosters’, which premiered last year and was renewed for a second season.
