Diplomatic seats empty for now

Some ambassadors have already bid their farewells, yet president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has not announced when she will appoint new Namibian diplomats.

This was confirmed by State House press secretary Jonas Mbambo this week.

“At this stage, her excellency the president has not yet made an announcement regarding the appointment of new ambassadors,” he said.

The appointments are the result of extensive consultations and require careful due diligence to ensure Namibia is well represented abroad, Mbambo said.

He said the Presidency will inform the public once the process has been completed and finalised.

In a letter dated 18 August, which The Namibian has seen, Namibia’s ambassador to China, Elia Kaiyamo, said he is proud of what they have achieved in strengthening bilateral relations between Namibia, China, Cambodia, Mongolia, North Korea and Vietnam.

Kaiyamo has served as ambassador for the past nine years.

“During these nearly a decade-long years, we have faced challenges, celebrated milestones, and built bridges that continue meaningful ways.

“Your dedication, resilience, and unwavering pride in representing Namibia made my mission not only successful but truly fulfilling,” he said.

The Namibian understands that Namibian heads of mission have been recalled and needed to vacate their posts by 22 August.

Only those who served less than five years remain.

This is, however, yet to be confirmed by the Ministry of International Relations and Trade, as it is yet to respond to questions sent this week.

Those remaining are Elizabeth Kakukuru, the high commissioner to Botswana, Richard Tsandib, the high commissioner to Senegal, and Selma Nghinamundova, Namibia’s ambassador to Brazil, who were appointed last year.

Namibia’s ambassador to France, Albertus !Aochamub, is set to become Meat Corporation of Namibia’s interim chief executive.

This was confirmed recently by Meatco board deputy chairperson Stephanie de Klerk.

In April, Nandi-Ndaitwah appointed former ambassador to Ethiopia, Djibouti, South Sudan and Sudan Emilia Muksa as Cabinet secretary.

She also recalled Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, who served as Namibia’s ambassador to Ghana, following her appointment as minister of international relations in March.

Former press secretary Alfredo Hengari is tipped for a post in France, while former justice minister Yvonne Dausab is also tipped to take up an ambassador post.
