NAMIBIA’S ambassador to the United States, Leonard Iipumbu, is to be appointed Agribank chief executive officer, sources said yesterday.

The Namibian has learnt that the Minister of Finance, Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila, has agreed to the board’s decision that Iipumbu, a career diplomat based in Washington, take over the controversial position. Comment could not be obtained yesterday from the Ministry of Finance or the Agribank board of directors. His appointment follows the sacking of the board of directors under the chairmanship of long-serving Dr Franz Stellmacher after they refused to agree with Kuugongelwa-Amadhila’s choice of Deputy Minister of Lands Isak Katali as acting CEO.The previous directors complained about political interference and argued that they wanted someone “suitably qualified” in leading a financial and agricultural institution.Comment could not be obtained yesterday from the Ministry of Finance or the Agribank board of directors. His appointment follows the sacking of the board of directors under the chairmanship of long-serving Dr Franz Stellmacher after they refused to agree with Kuugongelwa-Amadhila’s choice of Deputy Minister of Lands Isak Katali as acting CEO.The previous directors complained about political interference and argued that they wanted someone “suitably qualified” in leading a financial and agricultural institution.
