Dinyando urges action on special schools for pupils with disability

Member of parliament Bertha Dinyando has called on the National Assembly to urgently look into the needs of children with learning difficulties across Namibia.

While motivating a report on the proposal to establish special schools in the Kavango East and Kavango West regions, Dinyando said the issue is bigger than just two regions.

“The challenges facing children with learning difficulties is not peculiar to two regions only, it is affecting the whole country,” she said.

The report highlighted that, although there are resource units in place, there are still “many challenges facing these pupils,” including a lack of specialised teachers, proper learning materials, and hostel facilities.

Dinyando said the situation is worsened by the current inclusive education system where “pupils are being mixed or put in one group, irrespective of their social level or groupings.”

She urged lawmakers to adopt the report, saying the matter is long overdue and needs urgent attention.
