The hotdog is probably the world’s most identifiable fast food.In its simplicity, it oozes with flavour when everything is brought together seamlessly. When the bun is fresh, the sausage is grilled just right and the toppings adorn the meal just perfectly – this is what street food is all about.
Although its popularity is global, the hotdog finds its origins in Germany and then in the United States of America.
With the sausages (Frankfürters or wieners) imported from Germany, these sandwiches became popular in the US as street food for the average working class citizen, normally found at food stands or carts.
Although particularly connected with New York City and its cuisine, the hot dog eventually became omnipresent throughout the country and then hit the world with variations dependent on geography and demographics.
In Namibia, it’s enjoyed by university students, kids, office workers and labourers on the go.
Diebango’s Hotdogs and Home Shop serves to satisfy the appetite of street food lovers and does so impeccably. Located in Judika Street, Katutura, there is also a stand to be found in Windhoek West, at the corner of Johann Albrecht and Verdi Street, behind the Namibia University of Science and Technology.
Their main customer base consists of hungry, tired and beat-down students who long for something to up their energy levels. The food cart operates from 08h00 until 18h00 and is a popular spot serving not only the renowned snack, but also other Namibian favourites. Complete with friendly staff, the stand serves hotdogs in three different sizes and price categories, a ‘porsie’ chips, fish and of course, vetkoek. With a range of sauces and special recipes, Diebango’s Hotdogs certainly hits the spot. This is why the food usually runs out before closing time, leaving some customers disheartened at missing out on the succulent dogs.
