NAMIBIA Football Association (NFA) President Petrus Damaseb has been asked to stay on as president of the controlling body until Congress at the end of August.
An executive meeting held at Otjiwarongo on Saturday unanimously agreed to let Damaseb stay on until the NFA Congress picks a new leader. Damaseb was recently appointed as a permanent Judge to the High Court and as such is expected to resign from the football controlling body.An executive member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Damaseb had indicated that it would be selfish for him to step down with immediate effect. At the same meeting, the members proposed that a second vice president of the NFA be appointed. The second vice president will be appointed by the NFA Executive, but this will also require a constitutional amendment. The appointment of the second vice president is apparently aimed at easing the pressure on the NFA President.NFA spokesperson Cassius Moetie denied that the executive committee deliberated on the issue, but confirmed that an appointment of such a person was possible. He said the NFA Executive can appoint a second vice president, but it needs to be endorsed by Congress as well.Moetie said this can be done before the Congress. The Otjiwarongo meeting also discussed the way current Namibia Premier League (NPL) chairman, Anton van Wyk, was elected to the position of Chairman of the league. The meeting apparently argued that Van Wyk was not serving as a member of the NPL Board of Governors prior to his election.Only members of the NPL Board of Governors are eligible for election. The NPL will now be asked to make a constitutional amendment that will make Van Wyk a legitimate Chairman.Damaseb was recently appointed as a permanent Judge to the High Court and as such is expected to resign from the football controlling body.An executive member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Damaseb had indicated that it would be selfish for him to step down with immediate effect. The NPL will now be asked to make a constitutional amendment that will make Van Wyk a legitimate Chairman.
