Dam levels decline

THE country’s dams have recorded no significant changes since last week at an average of 43,3 per cent full, compared to 44,2 per cent recorded on January 26.

Although overall the country’s dams are less full than they were at the same time last year when they had reached 46,6 per cent of capacity, dams in the Windhoek area are considerably fuller than they were at the same time last season. The Goreangab Dam has reached full capacity – three times more than last year this time.The Avis Dam is 95,8 per cent full, after measuring only 12,3 per cent last year.The Swakoppoort Dam Wnow stands at 61 per cent full, the Von Bach Dam 42,4 per cent and the Friedenau Dam: 87,8 per cent.In the east the Otjivero Silt Dam is 71,6 per cent full compared to only 0,2 per cent last year at this time.The Tilda Viljoen (9,5 per cent) and Daan Viljoen (empty) dams were both fuller last year at this time.Poor rains in the South have resulted in the Hardap Dam only being 38,3 per cent full compared to 59 per cent last season.The Dreihuk and Bondels Dams are near empty.In the North, the Olushandja Dam is just more than half full, compared to 62,3 per cent at the same time last year.The Goreangab Dam has reached full capacity – three times more than last year this time.
