MUSICIAN Hango Frans Megameno, known as D-Kay in the entertainment scene, is set to release his second album at the end of this month.
The artist released his first song when he was 18 years old. At the end of this month, he plans to release his second album. Rinelda Mouton (RM) speaks to him about his love for music, his experience in the music industry thus far and some of his future plans.
RM: How did your interest in music start?
D-Kay: I grew up at the Epoko village in Omusati region. I used to play a guitar made of copper wire. I would sometimes record myself with my cellphone recorder. I started writing my own songs since I was in Grade 9. I used to enjoy watching videos on YouTube. In 2016 I met a group of dancers who gave me a contact number of a recording studio. I recorded my first song ‘Ependa’ (The warrior) and released it in August 2016, while I was in Grade 11. I was 18 years old at that time.
RM: Tell us about your first album?
D-Kay: After releasing my first album I was invited to perform at various events and decided to release my debut album in 2017. I released the album after I wrote my final examination in Grade 12. Artists such as Gazza and The Dogg inspired me.
RM: Tell us a little about your upcoming album?
D-Kay: The album is titled ‘De Hustler Boy’, which means someone who can go out to hustle and work hard to achieve their dreams. This is a strong person who believes in himself, no matter how hard it is. I decided to use this name to define my struggle as I can hustle hard to fight for what I want. This time around I have high expectations of my music going internationally. My new album is very different from my previous work. It is of high quality and I have worked only with some of the biggest producers in the industry such as Dj KBoz, Mr Glo and M-Jay. I feature artists like Exit, Sunny Boy, Young-T, Sally Boss Madam, TopCheri, Bantu, M-jay, D-kandjafa and Manxebe.
RM: What makes your music different from other artists?
D-Kay: I make music that motivates, collects, direct people and inspire people to work hard towards their dreams. This is what my upcoming album is all about. I make sure these messages reached the masses so that they could stop wrong things like killing each other and being involved in criminals activities. My music can be listened to by young and old people.
RM: What advice do you have for other artists?
D-Kay: My fellow artists, please don’t ever listen to those trying to discourage you. Just mind your own business and keep your head up. This is the best way to succeed.
RM: Besides music, what else do you do?
D-Kay: I have my own brand called ‘Namkidz-Entertainment’. Besides having a music studio, I also do the printing of T-shirts and Jerseys.
