D Kandjafa is kwaad and he’s ready to let the whole world know, thanks to the new album ‘Munene Is Kwaad’. Released earlier this year, various tracks have already been receiving airplay – deservedly. Born in the north, D Kandjafa, real name Phillipus Joseph, moved to the capital in 2007 and this was also when he was first introduced to music.
Unafraid to delve into genres of all sorts, D Kandjafa doesn’t want to just be classified as a kwaito artist, but rather the type of musician who gives the people what they want. “I used a lot of styles on this album, from house and kwaito to slow jams and dancehall. I do that for my people,” he said.
“People like different styles, they don’t want you to just do one thing.”
About the album’s name, he said it was his all about his drive for more. “The album is actually named after me, because I’m angry. People have been playing with me and I want them to know that I am very upset.” This is in connection with rejection and people telling him that he wouldn’t succeed. But thanks to his determination, he returned with the album to prove that he could prevail on the music scene and give his fans exactly what they want.
But the name Kandjafa is actually a funny one. “The name comes from my friends because I used to wear jackets all of the time. And I call myself Munene because it translates into the big one and people must realise that he is not happy.”
Starting off with the track ‘Munene Is Kwaad’, this catchy song accurately demonstrates his confidence and how well he can do on a track. His lyrical abilities are impressive and he can keep a good flow. This is definitely one of his best tracks on the album.
Going into a more mellow mood, ‘Young and Cool’ is a reggae-inspired track featuring M-Jay. Here, he expresses how much he’s enjoying his youth, and thanks to the quirky lyrics, it’s hard not to nod along to the rhythm.
Another notable song on the album is ‘Paulina’ where D Kandjafa sings to his lady love somewhere at Oshikango, saying she is his pain killer. “Baby, ndeku telela (baby, I am waiting for you),” he says on the album, complimenting her further.
D Kandjafa knows his limits when it comes to his singing abilities, which sets the tone for the song and makes it even more enjoyable.
He said some of his favourite songs include ‘Kam’kwanyoka’ and ‘Kavena Shivatya’ featuring Kavax. Expect features from Satlam, Beast, Appi-7 and Ama John 26 as well.
“The album only took three months,” the artist said. “But I’d really like to thank M-Jay for the productivity and creativity.” To other artists, he shared some advice: “Work hard and do it for the people. It’s about all the hard work that you put into it.” M-Jay, who also represents Drumkick Production, mixed, produced and mastered all the songs.
‘Munene Is Kwaad’ is available at Okalindi Music Shop in Ombili, Antonio’s Arts in Windhoek and Mono Music Shop in Wanaheda, Katutura.
