D For Drama

Oh, Namibia, Land of the Brave, also known as the land of relationship drama.

The problem is that we love to dig into other people’s business, but when it comes to our own, we go MIA. Who-who is dating who-who, who-who is having an affair with who-who’s husband or who-who is the hottest woman in town and works at ABC Company but how did she get her car, etc?

Wow. We’re all up in people’s business, aren’t we? I guess it’s hard to be a celebrity. Well, not always a celebrity, but I figure the right word to use here is ‘well-known’.

And this is a quality that starts in school. We all know this. We’d talk about the hottest guy or girl in school, relish in rumours about schoolmates and find the need to gossip about trouble brewing in the hallways. Whether it was someone kicked out of class again and making the principal’s office his/her home, or finding out stories about people’s after school activities in certain places which are strictly not for under 18s, we honestly have a knack for keeping up with these things and we love to stay updated.

Maybe these tales made school even spicier than it was supposed to be. I mean, it’s not like we go to school only for education. Yes, the secret is out! Admit it, I’m not the only one who enjoys it. Who knows, somewhere in the country, a young girl is probably clutching her school books a little tighter and pushing up her glasses to see her crush not notice her, again. But she lives for that. Or maybe a group of friends who call themselves the TKDs (or some other acronym that stands for something sinister) are looking forward to meeting up every day, playing cards and talking about life. Because these extraordinary moments make life and teach us how to become stronger, not only for ourselves, but for our future relationships.

Living for the drama, I figure.

But when you get older, you’ll realise that drama extends beyond school walls.

Welcome to university, the social hub of drama. At least you can escape your problems from school because no one knows who you are and they’re not interested in what’s going on in your life, unless you’re popular, hot or have an outlandish personality. That’s when you know people are going to talk about you and are paying attention. Some people enjoy the fame and use it to their advantage. Maybe it’s to score a radio gig or become a fashion icon on Instagram.

If you market yourself well enough, there’s no telling what opportunities are out there.

And what happens then? Fame. But then you’ll have to take the good with the bad. Whether it’s casually strolling to school on a bad hair day or something trivial like that, you better believe the WhatsApp groups are keeping an eye on you, constantly.

And if you’re dating someone even more famous, then you, my friend, are in for a treat.

Let’s not even go into the work environment! But I will. Welcome to office drama, a fresh type of drama that surrounds you from eight to five. It’s a tough world out there, so you have to keep certain things about yourself private because you don’t want your boss to know certain… activities you’ve been up to.

Who knows, if you work for a high profile company and worst turns to worst, you might end up on the front page of a newspaper with scandalous drama.

Drama, drama, drama! Every generation has its own. Every environment has its own. Too bad there’s no escaping it and we just can’t help but love it.
