Cymot labour case still dragging on

THE Metal and Allied Namibian Workers Union (Manwu) is still pressing for the reinstatement of 76 workers dismissed by Cymot last year.

Manwu Secretary General Moses Shiikwa told The Namibian this week that the union is still fighting the matter in the Labour Court. Shiikwa said the case would be heard from October 17 to 19.”We still stand by our point that the workers were unfairly dismissed,” said Shiikwa. The workers were dismissed after taking part in an illegal strike early last year. After an appeal hearing in June, chaired by labour consultant Sacky Aipinge, it was recommended that the workers be reinstated and given final written warnings.Cymot Manager Axel Theissen refused to do this.He said that the strikers had been given at least two ultimatums to return to work, and had refused four times to appear before a disciplinary hearing.Shiikwa said the case would be heard from October 17 to 19.”We still stand by our point that the workers were unfairly dismissed,” said Shiikwa. The workers were dismissed after taking part in an illegal strike early last year. After an appeal hearing in June, chaired by labour consultant Sacky Aipinge, it was recommended that the workers be reinstated and given final written warnings.Cymot Manager Axel Theissen refused to do this.He said that the strikers had been given at least two ultimatums to return to work, and had refused four times to appear before a disciplinary hearing.
