THE Namibian Model Pick & Pay Cycle Classic takes centre stage on Sunday when hordes of cycling enthusiasts are expected to line up for one of the most prestigious events on the domestic cycling calendar.
The race, which offers three different distances, has over the years grown into a fun-filled family affair, while competitive cyclists have also make it a point to settle scores before the end of the year. The race starts and finishes at the United Sport Club in Olympia and over 1 000 cyclists are expected to race in the 30, 60 and 100 kilometres around some of the major streets in the city.Organisers this year moved the starting time to 08h00 to allow cyclists to turn up on time, while more incentives for the various winners have been introduced. As customary, a children’s race will be held tomorrow, starting at 15h00, while registration for it will be done between 12h00 and 14h30 on the same day.The children will race over two different courses and parents are allowed to accompany the children. All the finishers will be awarded with medals and certificates if they complete their respective courses before 13h00 in the main races. The Namibian Pick & Pay Cycle Classic caters for business, family, schools’ and open teams and individuals can compete in groups of four cyclists. The organisers have emphasised that it is compulsory for all cyclists to wear helmets, but they can use any type of bicycle as long as it is roadworthy. This year, several top names in Namibian cycling will compete for top honours, especially over the longer distances, while several riders are also expected from neighbouring South Africa.
