Curtain set to fall on Phoenix

THE Hollywood action movie, ‘Flight of the Phoenix’, has entered its last week of filming in Namibia.

By the end of the week everybody will pack up and leave after three months of work on the first major feature film to be shot completely in Namibia. The opening scenes are being shot this week.The set had to be moved to the Rossing mountain, about 30 km outside Swakopmund, where an oil rig, operations offices and a landing strip have been built.The movie stars Dennis Quaid, in the lead role, and 10 other actors.It starts with oil rig workers being picked up by a plane to go home.The plane crashes during a desert sand storm and the survivors plan to escape by building a new plane from the parts they find in the wreckage.Director John Moore said on Monday he was very happy so far.The filming of the remake of the 1965 original has attracted attention from international media.On Monday a journalist and writer were on set to do a story for Conde Naste Traveller magazine.The report will also focus on Namibia as a tourist destination.Two of the actors, R&B star Tyrese Gibson and rap artists Sticky Fingaz, won the hearts of coastal residents when they gave a free concert at the Mole Beach on Sunday night.More than 6 000 people flocked to the concert.Tyrese told The Namibian he had decided to do the concert to do “something for the people of Namibia”.The opening scenes are being shot this week.
