Currency Surcharges Disgrace

Currency Surcharges Disgrace

DEAR STANDARD BANK

I was one of the lucky ones who were able to have their credit card swiped at some major retail outlets in Windhoek during the early part of December. An added incentive was that I was told I might win ‘a fabulous electronic prize’ if my new Namibian credit card was swiped at least five times before December 9.
My luck ran out when I received my account and saw that I was charged foreign currency surcharges on 99% of the transactions. The foreign currency being our Nam dollars.
The consultants at the call centre in Johannesburg were clueless and could not tell me why; two of them promised to phone me back, which they did not do – I was later told upon my third call to them that they were too busy. (I have their names if you wish to follow up on the pathetic service.)
A very fast-talking lady in your card division in Windhoek said it is not the Bank’s fault and there is no way these charges will be reversed.
Maybe some training in telephonic customer service is called for, as I could hardly understand what she was saying. What about the draw for the fabulous electronic prizes?
Has it taken place?
Can we see a list of the winners please and what their prizes were?
Why should we pay foreign currency surcharges for using our Namibian credit cards in Namibian outlets?
Dear Standard Bank MD, isn’t it time to let your loyal customers know what’s going on?
