Cross-border power supply line commissioned

CALAI – The Governor for the Cuando Cubango Province in Southern Angola, Joao Batista Chindandi, this week said a lot needed to be done to develop Angola and urged Namibians, especially those living along the two countries’ common border, to play a vital role.

Chindandi encouraged residents in the four towns of Cuangar, Calai, Dirico and Mucusso to ensure that they developed their towns with the electricity supplied from neighbouring Namibia. Speaking at the official inauguration of a cross-border power supply line, the Governor urged the business community in the Kavango Region to strengthen the already existing co-operation with their Angolan counterparts in terms of trade. He said the Angolan government still needed Namibia’s assistance in reconstructing its infrastructure and the electricity supply would go a long way towards helping to provide water and ensuring that schools and health facilities were operational. However, Ronald Kubas, director for energy with Namibia’s Burmeister and Partners Consulting Engineers spoke about the delays in completing the project on time due to the landmine risks. The area had first had to be cleared of unexploded ordinance and landmines.Kubas identified the other delaying factor as the lack of bridges across the Kavango River to areas where the power was needed – like Cuangar, Calai, Dirico and Mucusso.Kubas noted that the construction teams had received excellent co-operation from administrators and locals in most towns. He said the next assignment where the two countries would join forces would be the supply of power to the towns of Xangongo and Cahama.A total of 434 domestic service connections to institutions such as schools, government buildings, clinics and shops in the four towns were made as well as installing the latest technology in pre-paid metering and vending systems.- NampaSpeaking at the official inauguration of a cross-border power supply line, the Governor urged the business community in the Kavango Region to strengthen the already existing co-operation with their Angolan counterparts in terms of trade. He said the next assignment where the two countries would join forces would be the supply of power to the towns of Xangongo and Cahama.A total of 434 domestic service connections to institutions such as schools, government buildings, clinics and shops in the four towns were made as well as installing the latest technology in pre-paid metering and vending systems.- Nampa
