Councillor proposes bigger earth dam in Oshana

Okatyali constituency councillor Joseph Mupetami says floodwater in the north is going to waste because there are no dams to store it.

Speaking to The Namibian this week, Mupetami said the Oshana region needs two or three dams larger than the Neckartal Dam in the //Kharas region.

“We should build bigger dams. I am not happy with the small earth dams we have been constructing in the Oshana region. They are too small. We need dams bigger than Neckartal so we can harvest the water. A bigger dam can hold water for up to two years,” the councillor said.

He said currently the water is going to waste, and by October, there will be no water left for animals.

He suggested building dams near Oponona and Okuma, areas the water passes before flowing into Etosha National Park.
