Cota Youth Choir Namibia, together with Richmond Youth Honour Choir from Canada, will entertain the Windhoek public on Saturday, 6 July with an exciting combined concert.
The concert will take place in the Pionierspark Dutch Reformed Church and start at 19h00. Hot chocolate and traditional Glühwein will be for sale during the interval.
This concert serves as the farewell concert of Cota Youth Choir Namibia, who will be representing Namibia in the 2018 World Choir Games (WCG) in Tswane, South Africa. It will be the third time this highly acclaimed choir will represent Namibia in the World Choir Games and, through its successful track record of bringing home gold and silver medals, has established itself as an export product of high standard to be proud of.
The World Choir Games takes place every second year on a different continent. This year is the first time that it will take place in Africa.
The visiting choir from Canada will also participate in the WCG. They are officially the choir that is travelling the biggest distance to attend the WCG.
The Richmond Youth Honour Choir (RYHC) is concluding its 16th season with this tour to Africa. Heidi Epp has been the artistic director for the last eight seasons.
Under her direction, the RYHC has expanded into three divisions and has enjoyed participating in many festivals in addition to their many concerts and special appearances. They collaborate regularly with other choirs of all ages as well as youth orchestras.
Under her direction, they have also commissioned two works by the celebrated Canadian composer Timothy Corlis. This is how Epp became acquainted with Fanie Dorfling, through their mutual colleague.
They are delighted to be singing the first of the commissions ‘Listen to the Music’ with the Cota choir while visiting here in Namibia.
This is the RYHC’s second international tour. The first was three years ago to Wakayama in Japan, a sister-city to Richmond. Last year they were on tour to Ottawa, the Canadian capital, to be part of the official Canada 150 celebrations being the only choir to represent British Columbia.
In a press release, the Cota Youth Choir Namibia said they will be hosted by the Constantiapark Primary School choir under the direction of Annelie van Rooyen before participating in the World Choir Games in a non-competitive capacity.
“During the concert the raffle competition of the Cota Youth Choir Namibia will come to an end with the drawing of the prizes. The choir expresses its deepest appreciation towards the various sponsors of prizes, as well as to its two main sponsors, Pupkewitz Foundation and Bank Windhoek, which assisted financially to ensure that the Cota Choir could attend the WCG.”
As the choir still needs a significant amount of money for transport to Tshwane and additional meals, the public is invited to contribute through donations after the concert.
