Correctional service holds memorial for officers killed in Mariental crash

The Namibia Correctional Service held a memorial service at the Hardap Correctional Facility on Monday to honour the 14 officers who died in a road accident near Mariental.

The governor of the Hardap region, Riaan McNab, extended condolences on behalf of the regional leadership during his speech at the event.

“We all should keep praying for the families and to the people who are part of our correctional services, we offer our deepest sympathies to you as a force. Our deepest respect goes to the safety, security and the order that you maintain in our country, we salute you this morning,” McNab said.

A total of 16 people died in the accident on the B1 road near Mariental on Saturday.

Hardap Regional Council chairperson Gershon Dausab said this is a sad moment for Mariental.

“You, individually and collectively as a force, will pull through this difficult time. The choice was not made by us, but the heavenly master. God has embedded the trust in you to carry this burden on behalf of the nation,” Dausab remarked.

After the memorial service, Mariental mayor Cherien Kock described the tragedy as a significant loss for the Mariental community and the Hardap region.

“I’m standing here with a heavy heart this morning. It is indeed a sad moment for the inhabitants of Mariental and the Hardap region. These were our service providers, serving the Hardap region with dedication. They were probably the only breadwinners in their families and this morning we stand in solidarity and support with their loved ones,” Kock said.

The service was attended by several dignitaries, including McNab, Dausab, Kock, several councillors, members from the Mariental municipality and officers from the Hardap Correctional Service.
