Cop gets bail for cellphone stolen from murder victim

Vernon Gavin

A Walvis Bay police officer, Bartholomeus Shindimba, was released on bail in an amount of N$1 000 on Friday, after allegedly being found in possession of a stolen cellphone belonging to Vernon Gavin (52), who was found dead at home on 30 December.

Erongo police spokesperson inspector Ileni Shapumba says Shindimba, who is stationed at Walvis Bay Police Station, has appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court and is due to reappear on 17 April.

His charges pertain specifically to the possession of stolen property, with further investigations to determine his full involvement in the case.

Gavin was allegedly raped and murdered.

The two primary suspects, Quanito van Vuuren (25) and Moses Sem (20), have been detained and are facing rape and murder charges. Three bottles of beer were found at the scene, while other substances may also have been used.

The police have ruled out suicide.

Gavin was employed at a bank at Walvis Bay and was well loved among his colleagues.
