ERONGO Police chief Festus Shilongo has been promoted from Deputy Commissioner to Commissioner.
He became the regional commander for Erongo in 2007 after being transferred from the Kunene Region, and has made it his mission to ‘make Erongo safe’.
Housebreaking and theft in the region dropped after he took over. A special ‘tourist crime unit’ was recently established to focus exclusively on combating crime against visitors.
Police Public Relations Committees have been established in towns in the region, and the Erongo Police are supporting several neighbourhood watches.
Shilongo told The Namibian that more will be expected of him now. ‘I cannot do this without the public’s help,’ he said.
He said his focus will now turn to fighting domestic and gender-based violence in the region, saying the high incidence of assault, rape and domestic abuse is a major concern.
‘My goal was to be a good Deputy Commissioner, but I intend to stay here as a Police commander, because I am a policeman, and that’s what I do best.’
