Concern about foreign engineers

THE Association of Consulting Engineers of Namibia (ACEN) has expressed concern over the number of foreign engineers flooding the country.

In a press release, the association’s President, Ronald Kubas, says the influx is a cause for concern because it has led to “fraudulent activities”. “The Association of Consulting Engineers of Namibia has noted with concern the number of foreign engineers operating in Namibia and would like to draw the attention of Namibian clients, associated professionals and project partners to the consequences of such a surge.”Among other things, the association warned the public that non-Namibian engineers working in Namibia need to register with the Engineering Council of Namibia before starting any work.Secondly, Kubas reminded the public that foreigners needed work permits before engaging in any engineering project.”Business and holiday visas cannot be used to work in Namibia,” he added. The ACEN President emphasised that it was critical to make use of local skills and expertise where available and refrain from engaging foreign firms that did not employ Namibians or re-invest fees in the Namibian economy, and were not familiar with Namibian conditions, procedures and legislation.”The Association of Consulting Engineers of Namibia has noted with concern the number of foreign engineers operating in Namibia and would like to draw the attention of Namibian clients, associated professionals and project partners to the consequences of such a surge.”Among other things, the association warned the public that non-Namibian engineers working in Namibia need to register with the Engineering Council of Namibia before starting any work.Secondly, Kubas reminded the public that foreigners needed work permits before engaging in any engineering project.”Business and holiday visas cannot be used to work in Namibia,” he added. The ACEN President emphasised that it was critical to make use of local skills and expertise where available and refrain from engaging foreign firms that did not employ Namibians or re-invest fees in the Namibian economy, and were not familiar with Namibian conditions, procedures and legislation.
