Community taking control of water

THE Tsub!gaos Water Point Association (WPA) in the Hardap Region on Thursday signed a leasehold agreement with the Directorate of Rural Water Supply to operate and maintain 13 water points.

The Water Point Committee, or WPA, is part of Government’s vision to ensure that all rural communities have water by 2007 and that they manage their water points. The Governor of the Hardap Region, Pieter Boltman, officiated at the handing over ceremony of the 13 water points that will supply 35 households in the area with water. He said he was impressed by the way the Tsub!gaos community had taken ownership of the Kindergarten Hall that was built through the first-ever “cash-for-work” project in Namibia.Boltman also said he was impressed by their determination to grow in responsibility until the Government ceased its financial assistance in 2010.”Be guardians of these facilities for your own benefit as well as for the generations to come,” he urged the Tsub!gaos community. The Extension Officer of the Directorate of Rural Water Supply, Carlo Cloete, who works closely with the WPA, boasted that the Tsub!gaos community was the first in the Hardap Region to raise N$20 000 for the maintenance and management of their water points.
