Community members upset over inauguration lockout

SOME Havana informal settlement residents say they are unhappy with the government’s decision to move the Independence Day celebrations and the swearing-in of Namibia’s fifth president to State House, where only a few people will be allowed to attend.

The Ministry of Information and Communication Technology on Thursday evening announced that the event will take place at State House because of the heavy rains expected in central Namibia.

“Due to limited space and the high number of international guests, the public will not be able to attend the 35th Independence celebrations and the inauguration of Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as Namibia’s fifth president as expected,” the ministry said.

Karin Matheus (45), a community member, says she is disappointed. “We wanted to see our president inaugurated.”

Elise Paulus (34) added: “We are unhappy. We voted for her, we wanted to see her inaugurated.”

Meanwhile, at State House, a scuffle broke out after some people were denied entry due to space limitations.
